In a ground war just between the two of them, with no other fronts the Russians would have outmanned the Germans but still maybe not have had the firepower. The Germans would have bneen far superior in the air, but would have had too much land to cover to be effective. (just my opinion and I am not a big World War History person)

If you can't protect your supplies, eventually your troops run out of the things they need to carry the fight. Gun, bullets, shells, food, clothing, fuel, medical supplies, etc.

Russia had thousands of miles of territory to give up without really losing anything. Operation Barbarossa was a fiasco from the time Hitler actually thought about it. MHO

The same conditions defeated Charles X of Sweden and Napoleon. The distance, the cold, the isolation. In Napoleon's case General Kutuzov played a cat and mouse game and refused to meet Napoleon in battle. Let the distance and elements do the job instead. Stalin knew history, he knew Hitler would fare no better.

Right, bait the Germans into beleiving they were pushing the Russians back into Russian territory while at the same time fortifying your troops to beable to hold the fight on "their own turf" possibly enabling them to even come around them a fully cut off their supply line from Germany.
